Model-based Small Area Estimates of Cancer Risk Factors and Screening Behaviors

Model-based small area estimates are created by combining information from NHIS, BRFSS and auxiliary variables obtained from relevant sources (Census, American Community Survey, Administrative information) through novel statistical models.

  • Outcomes include smoking, mammography, pap smear and colorectal screening
  • Estimates are for counties, health service areas, and states
  • Estimates are for the following time periods: 1997-1999, 2000-2003, 2004-2007, 2008-2010, 2011-2013, 2014-2016, 2011-2016, 2014-2016, 2017-2019, or 2021-2023
  • Estimates for 2004-2007 and 2008-2010 include a correction factor for cell phone only households, updated methodology is used for 2011 and forward (see Methodology for details)

Notice: The definitions of the screening outcomes for the 2011-2023 periods are updated to match the corresponding updated U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations. Ever smoking prevalence was replaced by former smoking from 2011 and forward.
