Pap Smear Test Prevalence within Three Years (Age 21-65) Maps and Data of Model-Based Small Area Estimates
Definition:
For Pap smear test, a woman aged 21-65 (prior to 2011, the age range is 18+) must have reported having at least one Pap smear test in her life. Furthermore, she should have had the most recent one within the last three years by the time of interview.
The Pap smear test prevalence question was asked in BRFSS in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2011-2016 and the even years after 2000 as part of the core questionnaire for all states, and in NHIS in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2019. The question was worded in similar ways on the two surveys, except that for the time since most recent Pap Smear test question, NHIS asked for exact year, date or time period, while BRFSS only asked for time period.
Available estimates are for the time periods 1997-1999, 2000-2003, 2004-2007, 2008-2010, 2011-2016, and 2017-2019 and on maps and in data tables by county (except counties in Alaska before 2011), health service area (HSA) and state. The county estimates (2008-2010) are also released in State Cancer Profiles. Click on the map to view data values and confidence intervals for individual regions.
For 2011 and forward, the age range has been changed to 21-65 to match the updated U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations on cervical cancer screening.
