For former smoking, a person 18 years of age or older must have reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes in his/her life, and now doesn’t smoke cigarettes at all at the time of interview.
For long term former smoking (quit smoking for at least a year), a person 18 years of age or older must have reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes in his/her life, and now doesn’t smoke cigarettes at all at the time of interview and have quit smoking for at least a year.
The former smoking questions were asked every year in both BRFSS and NHIS and were worded in the same way on the two surveys.
